About Us

Onion Creek Farm is home to Joe Lynch and Lonna Nachtigal. The farm has been growing good food for the local market since 1995. Find Onion Creek Farm food at local restaurants, Wheatsfield Cooperative and through the Farm2Folk CSA. The farm is dedicated to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.

Lonna and Joe met at a local barn dance. There is nothing like a do-si-do and a balance and swing to get a relationship off to positive start. They share an interest in local food, music/dance, social justice, permaculture principles and the company of good friends.

Joe came to Iowa to work on environmental quality issues. His background in civil engineering gave him the courage to acquire the land and tackle the construction of the Onion Creek House. Passive solar design, built into the side of a hill, the Onion Creek house has been a continuing experiment for a comfortable and low-impact lifestyle.  Joe plays the English concertina, fixes most of what needs to be fixed on the farm and is involved in land use and environmental issues.

Lonna grew up in Wisconsin, in the land of black and white cows. She loves to garden, dance, cook, and draw pictures. She spent much of her early career in graphic design - both in print and in public broadcasting.  She now devotes more of her time to growing food on Onion Creek Farm. She is the creator of Lonna Cards and a freelance artist/illustrator. When the work is all done on the farm she loves to find herself in the middle of a live string band calling contras and squares for the Central Iowa Barn Dance.

They opened Onion Creek Farm Guest House in fall of 2008.
